DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES 

Under the direct supervision of the Refugee Receptionist (Protection), and overall supervision of the Protection officer, the interpreter/ translator will be required to adhere to the UNHCR working hours (Mondays  to Thursdays from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and on Fridays from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm). 

The interpreter/ translator will be expected to provide simultaneous/consecutive interpretation services, either in person or though the telephone during: 

  • Registration, Protection and Resettlement reception services at the office as well as the refugee reception centre
  • Refugee Status Determination interviews, BID interviews, home visits and all other general protection counselling as well as verification activities undertaken by the office
  • Community mobilization and outreach meetings
  • Annual Participatory Assessments with refugee communities
  • Meetings between the UNHCR and ARRA/ Partner counterparts
  • Official missions 

In addition, they will be expected to provide translation of: 

  • Supporting documents provided by refugees and asylum seekers
  • Modifications/changes/comments made by the refugees during the interviews
  • Information leaflets, notices and brochures to be disseminated to refugees
  • Record of meetings with refugees
  • Correspondence to the government, national/international counterparts, and vice versa

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience 

Education:

  • Completion of secondary school with post-secondary training/certificate in English language, or related areas 

Experience:   

  • At least 1 year of progressively responsible in interpretations and translations with an international organization is required
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required. 

Language Requirements: 

The interpreter / translator must possess excellent English and Amharic language skills (both written and spoken). In addition, he/she should be fluent in one or more of the following languages: 

  • Tigrigna
  • Somali 

Priority will be given to candidates with multiple language skills.
